In September 1999 Art Mason and I (Don Hinckfoot) purchased the sailboat Absolute, a Peterson 37, built by Wiggins’, Ontario Canada in 1982, for scrap valve. Absolute sat in dry dock for over 5 years uncovered and none of the plug hardware was pulled in the bottom to allow rain water to drain and the water was over the engines oil dip stick. We spent the next two years repairing the deck and transoms fiber glass and balsa, replaced a number of the oak stringers along the bottom and up the side of the hull. A new 3-cylinder diesel engine with an angled transmission was installed on new oak motor mounts. The major renovations were completed in late May 2001. Absolute was purchased without sails and used sails had to be bought and re-cut for racing. July 2001 Absolute did its first major race, the Bayview Mackinac Race - long course (South Hampton). A used re-cut main was delivered late Friday night the day before the big race. This turned out to be Absolute’s first race and shake down since its purchase in 1999 and it finished 15th out of 18 boats. In the 2002 Bayview Mackinac Race Absolute finished 5th out of 20 boats in its class and in the 2003 Bayview Mackinac Race Absolute took a 1st place in its class. Absolute has done two Chicago Mackinac Races 2007 and 2008 (100 Th.). Absolute and the crew are looking forward to doing the 2009 Chicago Mackinac Race (101 St.) and continuing on for the 2009 SUPER MAC to Port Huron. Then turn around and compete in the 2009 Bayview Mackinac Race (85 Th) doing the old traditional long course the Cove Island Course ORR. Absolute is a great sailboat and since the time it was built in 1982 for racing it has loved to race. Art and I take great pride in Absolute and we’re proud that we were able to salvage Absolute to keep it racing. |

Back in 1978, a race horse went down in history for his fortitude, and outright speed. His name was AFFIRMED, when challenged down the stretch by the larger stronger, Alydar, it was AFFIRMED who won each of the Triple Crown races in arguably the best rivalry of all time. No horse has won the Triple Crown since. "I'll Have Another" had a shot this year, ironically enough, he had the same maternal bloodline as AFFIRMED, and was undefeated in 2012. However, an injury prevented him from racing to win the TRIPLE CROWN. So Affirmed remains the last triple crown winner. The father and son team of Nick and Jason Geisz, and the rest of the crew, are excited to be a force on the Great Lakes, and continue a tradition of winning aboard AFFIRMED. Equipped this year with technology upgrades, a fresh set of sails, and a highly talented/committed crew, anything short of a victory is a disappointment. We thank the race committee, all the spouses, and raise a toast for all the effort that goes into such a memorable part of our sailboat racing lives! See you at the island. We were back in 2011 as a tribute to the Skippers Son Scott who passed away in Nov 2010 after a life long struggle with Cystic Fibrosis he received a double lung transplant operation in September of 2010 which did not go as planned. The Crew of Bear's Mistress is back and hoping to improve upon the 2011 finish, in any case we're thinking of Scott when we're out there! |

This Fast Tango is making it's fourth appearance (as Fast Tango) in this year's Port Huron to Mackinac race, having won our class in 2010. The crew includes several Old Goats, and some punk ass kids. Just rescued the boat from four years on the hard this February 2012. We are the 2nd owners! This is our third Catalina, we just moved up from a Catalina 25. And this will be our first Mackinaw Race in 2013. We are making the needed updates and giving her the TLC she deserves. My Brother Ron and I keep her on the Clinton River, just across from the NSSC. We enjoy the weekly CRCA pin racing events and some of the weekly fun racing the, NSSC does on Wednesday, we also look forward to the weekend cruising with close friend and family. She is very seaworthy and pretty boat with classic lines that date back to the CCA rules era in racing. Under previous skipper, Com. History. Boats named "Rowdy" have been raced in the Bayview Mackinac Races for the past 38 consecutive years by Val A. Saph. The name comes from a former Bayview boat - a 61' J-40 owned by former Bayview member Ril Wigle, and chartered by Val and other teenagers for 2 week trips on Lakes Huron and Michigan, and Georgian Bay, in the late 1950's. That boat was noted for its leopard skin interior, wild parties and coming close to going over Niagra Falls until the anchor held when Ril took a wrong turn. It was now in Europe after an extensive refit. The current Rowdy is a Thomas 35 raced in the Bayview Mackinac Race since 1990. It has taken first place in its class in 1991, 1993 and 2007. The current crew have raced with Val for many years. This crew consists of Tyson Connolly, who has raced his boats, including a Standfast 40 and Cal 25, successfully for many years. The rest of the crew, in order of "seniority" consists of Joe Banka, a retiree, Jim Schiller, a bar owner, Tom Heaslip, a Detriot firefighter, Val C. Saph, a Chrysler employee and the owner's nephew , Darren Shavinski, a postman, Nick Lounsbury, a college student, Dirk Oussoren, an Automotive Engineer, and Terry Wolf, a US Postoffice adminitrator.. Former crew member, Kent Herzer, who was lost off this boat on a return trip after a Mackinac race and sailed on all 3 Rowdys owned by Val, is still sorely missed by everyone. Rowdy is proud to represent Port Huron Yacht Club, which has always warmly welcomed the Bayview/Mackinac racers to Port Huron. |

Entering their 8th straight Mackinac Race, the rugged crew from Turn The Page is eager to earn another flag! Although crossing the finish line in one piece is always nice!!
All the members of the boat have played football, wrestling, or coached for Skipper/Owner Larry Walters. Larry coached Varsity Football and Varsity Wrestling at Mount Clemens High School(Battling Bathers) for over 37 years. The boat returns Johnston, Monaghan, Roskopp, and Mason from last year's race.

Twisted was born in France in 1984 into the one design world of 1-tonners. When it retired from the one design class it was donated to the Naval Academy where it was renamed Phantom. After three years it was sold and raced in the Detroit area under the name of Player. The boat currently sails out of Bay City, Michigan. The owners are both are Old Goats. |

The name remains the same, but the boat is a brand new J/111. Quite a step up from the UHDB Catalina 30. Last years perfect conditions culminated in a surprising first place overall in Cruising Division. Lot's of new challenges this year with a new boat and new course, but the fun will remain. |

The first Weather Edge was an Express 27. Colt Weatherston and Wade Edwards, both avid Snipe sailors, were the co-owners of the Express and sailed it for many years together. Weather Edge II was an Etchells and was once again owned jointly by Colt and Wade until Wade Edwards moved to Boston where he now is the Director of the Boston Sailing Center.
In 2008 Colt purchased Weather Edge III and she sailed her first Mackinac Race finishing 2nd in the Beneteau 36.7 class. 2011 Weather Edge III won the Ben 36.7 class.

WIND Toy IV is a Morgan 42 owned by the Bunn family since she was built in 1970. Since 1970, we have won our class 5 times, our division once and placed in both several other times. After a 3 year restoration project, we hope to continue our success this year. This year marks Wind Toy's 40th sailing of the Port Huron to Mackinac race.
This year Wind Toy IV will be representing the Detroit Lions in the Pro Sports Team Challenge.

The crew has worked effortlessly to practice & prepare the ship for this race. The boat is a 1988 C&C 38 Mk III & was used for cruising the Great Lakes until the boat was purchased in 2004 when the boat started it's racing career starting in local beer can races evolving to the MAC. |

One sort of young guy populates this mostly older crew of four men and two women who make this boat go. The young guy's grandfather sailed 40 foot ice boats. His uncle is a grand ram. His father still sails the Mac. He is keeping the family tradition going with gusto. Another crew member is a retired high school teacher whose students undoubtedly miss her daily. Four attorneys make the boat one in which the wind never dies. |
