Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race Inspires the Creative Arts

The Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race has always inspired creative endeavors.  In addition to the countless books and articles written prior to 2012, the past fifteen years alone have produced no less than one DVD (‘Island Finish – Sailing Port Huron to Mackinac’, circa 2004) and two books (‘Victory’, 2006 and ‘A Class of Their Own’, 2008, both written by Tom Ervin).  But the creative output is not limited to books and DVD’s alone.  Below, please find a poem that was first submitted in 2015, then updated for 2017, and written by David Tyler, a crewmember of Sundance, a NA 40 skippered by Jack Gillis and Dick Hathaway.  If you have similar talents which you’d be interested in sharing which are suitable for the general public, whether poems, compositions or artwork, please send them in and we’ll publish them at the discretion of this Race Chairman (submission of your pieces constitutes permission to publish). Thanks & enjoy!

THE MAC ATTACK (Port Huron to Mackinac) - by David Tyler

History was written many years ago, when twelve yachts decided to race

They wanted a challenge unlike any other, setting a world class pace

250 miles is what they said, was enough to challenge them all

They let it be known that this first race, more than answered the call

The yachts were off in a southerly breeze, with the air feeling light and warm

Gentle winds were on the horizon, no signs of the coming storm

A gale force wind in a raging sea, is how the legend goes,

How long it blew is anyone's guess, no one really knows

Six of twelve yachts finished that year, and Bernida won first place

Those that dropped out had lost their sails, no chance of keeping the pace

The news reported a record was set, for the world's longest freshwater race

The question was asked, who was ready, to challenge Bernida's pace

93 years since that day, and many sailors have answered the call

Word has travelled around the world, the best racers have joined them all

Denali, Defiant and Sundance too, have all brought in their best crew

Race hard and fast, and win the Mac, is what they are challenged to do

World Class racing is the key, to bring sailors to your door;

The challenge however, is to create a race, that brings them back for more

Exotic races come to mind, but none like the Port Huron to Mac

A favorite of many and a choice of more, sailors love the Mac Attack

Step back in time at the finish line, to see and sense the feel

Horse drawn carriages on the roads, no vehicles of steel

The day is done, all hope they have won, what was started miles away

The winning yacht and winning crew, is the question of the day

Bell’s and Bayview are the team that hold this world-class chase

The challenge, the beer, the music you hear all make for a Pure Michigan Race

200 yachts answer the call to race the Port Huron to Mac,

Once they sail from beginning to end, they are sure to always come back
