Saturday & Sunday, April 21-22, 2018
Bayview Yacht Club is proud to again host the nationally sanctioned US Safety-at-Sea Seminar on Saturday & Sunday, April 21-22, 2018. The 2-day event is required for various offshore races (e.g. Newport/Bermuda) and highly recommended to all area cruising and racing skippers, crew members, and their families, as well as recreational power-boaters interested in perfecting their safety-at-sea.
This authoritative educational seminar will provide novice and experienced mariners alike with the latest practical information and skills on:
- boat and crew preparation
- weather forecasting
- safe seamanship
- handling heavy water
- emergencies on the water
- man-overboard & rescue drills
- hands-on Safety & Medical equipment activities
- land-based and in-pool activities (i.e. flares, fire extinguishers, life rafts, heaving lines, etc)
- with special attention on the risks and skills most applicable to safety on the Great Lakes, as well as inland and offshore waters.
In addition, there will be on-the-water demonstrations of man-overboard recoveries, hands-on pool activities including practicing heaving lines, inflating and getting into life rafts, and hands-on land activities including proper use of fire extinguishers and the use of flares. A special demonstration of a helicopter rescue by the US Coast Guard Air Station is tentatively scheduled.
Bill Biewenga, an accomplished inshore/offshore sailor with 400,000 sea miles including 41 transatlantic crossings, 60+ passages to/from the Caribbean via Bermuda, TransPacs, and 4 round-the-world races and experienced US SAILING Safety-at-Sea moderator, will lead the seminar. Other experienced sailing experts will be presenting on safety techniques and information, equipment, first-aid and weather.
The program will run from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm on both days (Saturday at BYC, Sunday at Detroit Yacht Club) with lunch, snacks, and soft drinks provided. Participants will receive all required seminar materials and an official US SAILING Safety Certification that is good for 5 years.
