Dear Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race (BBBMR) Skippers, Crew, Sponsors and Spectators:
There are now 135 days until the 2018 Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race and 92 days until registration closes on June 1st. The deadline for using your BYC member account for your entry is April 30th.
As of today, there are 93 boats registered, 61 on the Cove Course and 32 on the Shore course. Of the One Design classes that have applied for their own start, the J 120’s have 7 boats, Level 35’s have 5, four for the Beneteau 36.7’s, and three C & C 35s. Just a reminder, for OD class approval, 10 registered boats are required. So, please encourage your class mates to get registered as early as they can.
I have arranged the class splits to show the OD, Cruising, Doublehanded, and racing classes to make it easier to see who you will be racing against. We will not make the racing class splits until after the entry deadline so that we can get them as accurate as possible.
By the time you read this update, meteorologist Mark Thornton will have been at Bayview to teach us all how to better predict the weather. The seminar was on February 24th and I hope that you made it. On April 21-22 is the Safety at Sea Seminar which is now sold out. Mark has updated the weather resources documents on the www.bycmack.com website. They can be found under Safety Articles which can be found by clicking on the “Official Board” tab then under the Safety & Other Docs header click on “Bayview Mackinac Sailing Safety” and the articles are under the Safety Articles header.
ORR has sent out renewal notices in February to every boat that had either an ORR or ORR-EZ certificate in 2017. Any new boat to the race will need to go to the ORR website and apply for a rating. For ORR ratings the link is https://ucs.ussailing.org/#/welcome, and for ORR-EZ it is https://offshoreracingassociation.org/component/rsform/form/3-application-for-orr-ez-rating. These links are also on the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race website at http://bycmack.com/ under the “Official Board” tab.
To reiterate what I said last month…the #1 thing that each of you can do to help us make the best class splits for you is to help us get more boats registered. Bigger numbers means more classes and tighter rating bands in each class. Please talk to friends at your yacht club, marina, and boat basin to convince them to register for the 2018 BBBMR.
Please go to our website often where we will post all competitor notifications and updates, as well as the calendar of important dates.
In closing I would like to thank our sponsors and supporters for the race: Bell’s Brewery, Grand Hotel, Gill, Coral Reef Sailing Apparel, Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry, North Sails, Pentastar Aviation, Aitken Ormond Insurance, Frankenmuth Insurance, Vortexx Pressure Washers, Sykes Webster, Bayview Yacht Club Foundation, Mike’s Marine Supply, Thomas Hardware Company and Detroit Sports Media.
We at Bayview Yacht Club are honored that you choose to participate in our Race and will make it the best it can be for you. Please register early and bring your friends!
