Dear Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race (BBBMR) Skippers, Crew, Sponsors and Spectators:
Race preparations are moving along with less than 2 months before the 94thrunning of the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race, and we hope to see all of you there.
Crunch time is here:
As of this writing we have 16 days left to register and 26 days left to receive your rating. If you are having challenges with any part of this process, please contact me, your humble Race Chair, or our highly competent Technical Director, Art LeVasseur for help. Our work really begins when you have completed your entry, so please help us out and get registered today. Our e-mails are email@example.com firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you have been waiting for your rating to come back before your register…don’ wait! There are more than 100 boats who have competed in our race in the past two years that we have not heard from yet. We know you are out there and need you to get registered now.
Why is it necessary to get a new rating every year?
ORA works on the ratings every year. They look at results of each race, compare it to the proprietary wind mix, and make any changes necessary to make the rule as fair as possible. Please send in your renewal ASAP since we must have your rating on file by June 10th.
Have you paid for your rating?
It has come to our attention in the past few days that not everyone has paid for their rating yet. Please pay for it today.ORA is working hard to get the ratings done and do not have time to reach out to you for payment. I can guess that you probably will not get a rating if it is not paid for.
Many of you have sent in your insurance certificates that expire before the race and have not received your renewal. I won’t call and bug you about it, so please remember to get the new certificate uploaded as soon as you receive it.
We ask that you use your Reflective Sailboard(as outlined in both Monohull and Multihull SER 3.13) as required by the Sailing Instructions. If you do not use your reflective sailboard as outlined in the Sailing Instructions, you will be subject to protest by the Race Committee. If you need a new placard, we have a vendor who promised to make them for $125 plus tax. You can contact Bill Lince of SIGNMAN at 586-915-6430.
Each year the Race Committee boat at the starting line receives race day crew substitutions from competitors over VHF channel 71. This is a reminder that the RC does not approve those substitutions, they merely record them. Each competitor is required to ensure that any crew substitution does not exceed the crew weight declared on their ORR or ORR-EZ certificate. Your crew weight will not be measured by the Race Committee, but you are subject to protest by a competitor.
Safety at Sea Seminar:
April 21-22 was the US Sailing Safety at Sea seminar. I personally attended the seminar and was in awe of how great it was. I have been racing sailboats for 53 years and have never before been in the water with full gear, inflated a PFD while in the water, fired a flare gun, spoken to the USCG on the VHF radio, or climbed into a life raft. All of the instructors were top notch and I recommend the seminar to every racing sailor and in fact, every boater. If we run it again next year, be sure to register early since this one sold out in a few weeks.
Looking for Crew?
If you need more crew for the Race please check out the "Crew Board" under "Race Information" on the website. We have a lot of people looking for rides to Mackinac.
I encourage skippers and crew to regularly review the NOR, SER, and Cruising Rules. The Sailing Instructions will become available about two weeks before the Race when we have the class splits determined. There are subtle changes this year and it would be a shame if you missed something that cost you a podium finish.
ORR and ORR-EZ Ratings:
ORR rating renewal notices were sent out on March 12th, and ORR-EZ on April 2nd. If you have not received yours, please contact ORA directly at the web addresses below. If you have delayed registering for the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race until you have applied for your rating, you can now do both. When you receive your rating you must upload it to your registration page.
For ORR ratings the link is https://ucs.ussailing.org/#/welcome, and for ORR-EZ it is https://offshoreracingassociation.org/component/rsform/form/3-application-for-orr-ez-rating. These links are also on the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race website at http://bycmack.com/.
