Dear Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race (BBBMR) Skippers, Crew, and Friends:

There is only three months until the 95thrunning of the race. Entries are continuing to come in and as of this writing (March 24th) we have 116 entries.

There are more than 165 volunteers that are needed to run this Race. March 20thwas the first Race Committee Chair’s meeting to start the process of setting up this year’s Race. All changes to the Race will be clearly outlined in the Sailing Instructions when they are posted.

As a reminder, we ask that you use your Reflective Sailboard(as outlined in both Monohull and Multihull SER 3.13) as required by the Sailing Instructions. If you need a new placard, we have a vendor who promised to make them for $125 plus tax. You can contact Bill Lince of SIGNMAN at 586-915-6430.

Our Harbor and Inspection Committee members will be greeting you on Mackinac Island with LED light arm bands and colored t-shirts again this year so that you can easily identify them.

Again, we anticipate requiring pre-race inspection of all new boats to the BBBMR. We will continue with the post-race inspection dock on Mackinac Island. Please stay tuned for updates to the inspection process.

March has been a very busy month with multiple educational seminars to fine tune and improve our sailing skills. In particular, I want to thank Karl Kuspa and Bill Gladstone from North Sails/North U for their seminar on Mackinac Race Strategy. There were over 135 people in attendance.

There are a few more seminars coming up. On April 4th  at 7 p.m. at Bayview Yacht Club, Dr. Kropp will be presenting “Onboard medical Skills”. This Seminar opens up the opportunity to learn how to manage medical conditions on-board. Dr. Kopp and a few emergency medicine residents will walk you through basic medical care for injuries that may occur underway. The Curriculum will include but not limited to:

- Laceration cleaning/repair

- Bleeding Control

- Splinting for sprains/fractures

- Burn care

- Neck/back immobilization

- Head injury assessment

- Emergency Call-In

This is a hands on skills lab and attendees are expected to participate. Some stations are resource intense, so it is important to understand the number of people who will be attending as there's a limited number of spots. Please RSVP to Natalie@byc.com or call BYC at (313) 822-1853 by April 1, 2019.

On Wednesday, April 17th at 7 p.m. Todd Jones of Thomas Hardware Company will be presenting on Inflatable PFD Care and Maintenance. Inflatable PFD inspection, maintenance, and re-arming will be discussed. Attendees are encouraged to bring their inflatable PFD's, for a hands on learning experience. Both seminars are open to all to attend.

I strongly encourage you to review the Notice of Race, Safety Equipment Requirements and the ORR or ORR-ez Rulebook.Know your race, requirements and rules. All of these documents can be found online. The Notice of Race, Safety Equipment Requirements and Cruising Rules can be found on the Notice Board on the race website (www.bycmack.com). The ORR and ORR-ez Rulebook can be found on the ORR website (www.offshoreracingrule.org). The US Sailing Racing Rules can be found on their website (www.ussailing.org) under the Competition tab.

I also strongly encourage all participants to take the US Sailing Online Offshore Safety at Sea Course. Information about this course can be found on the US Sailing website (www.ussailing.org) under the Education tab.

Please go to our website often where we will post all competitor notifications and updates, as well as the calendar of important dates.

In closing, I would like to thank our sponsors and supporters for the race: Bell’s Brewery, Grand Hotel, Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry, North Sails, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Pentastar Aviation, Aitken & Ormond Insurance, Frankenmuth Insurance, Marx Layne, Bayview Yacht Club Foundation and Detroit Sports Media.

We look forward to seeing all of you on the lake soon and at the starting line of our next Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race. Please register early and bring your friends!

It’s not too early to start planning to participate in the 100thrunning of the Bayview Mackinac Race in 2024. It will be here before we know it!
