December, 2019

Happy Holidays! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. With all the boats out of the water and Christmas just around the corner there is a present the Mackinaw Race Committee would really like, contrasting sail numbers.

New technology in sail making is making boats faster and sails last longer, this is a good thing. Given that many of the new sails are dark or black special attention must be paid to having contrasting sail numbers. Daytime finishes are hard enough but add in night finishes, many times when the sails are lit from shore or the boat the sail numbers are not visible even if they are in a contrasting color.

Please have your sailmaker inspect your sails and make sure your sails have the strongest contrasting color possible on all sails. This may not be the same color on every sail. Additionally, please consider using reflective material as part of your main sail numbers. This increased visibility does not just make life easier on the Race Committee it insures you, the competitor, gets the correct finish time.

Very simply put. If we can’t identify you, we can’t finish you. It is in your best interest to help us help you. After a couple of days on the water I am sure you and your crew would rather be enjoying the shenanigans on the island instead of filing a scoring inquiry. It has also been brought to my attention that NOAA will be “Sunsetting” their printed charts and raster chart products by January 2025. Per the NOAA Sunset Plan – “The sunset effort will wind down and ultimately stop production of all traditional NOAA paper nautical charts within five years.” This statement also applies at minimum to the updating of RNC charts. NOAA is eliminating these charts in favor of their ENC vector chart format. This format is and will be delivered electronically via the NOAA “Chart Selector”

NOAA RNC (raster) and ENC (vector) charts are available for download free. These charts work with Expedition and many other charting and navigation products. They may not work for those products that use proprietary chart formats. • RNC (product being sunset) - For anyone that is really fond of their raster charts the link to one of the download pages is https://www.charts.noaa.gov/RNCs/RNCs.shtml. • ENC - For anyone that wants to make sure they have the most up to date NOAA charts available use this link for the ENC charts https://www.charts.noaa.gov/ENCs/ENCs.shtml. • For anyone that just loves paper, get it before 2025.

Happy Holidays everyone and don’t forget to register for the 2020 race!! Chris Clark 2020 Race Chair
