Hello sailors!

We continue to plan for this year’s Bayview Mackinac Race and hope that you are too.  We have 74 boats registered so far and more applications are coming in every day.

Most of you have heard that we have switched from ORR to ORC this year.  This is a very positive development.  I am getting a few questions about ORC.  The most common is do you have to have an ORC International certificate, or is an ORC Club certificate acceptable? The answer is that both are acceptable.  Another comment I get, not so much a question, is that it appears that ORC rates boats to be a little faster than ORR.  As I understand it, that carries across the fleet so differentials will be similar.

Scuttlebutt recently posted the article below, which I invite you to peruse and follow the links.

Spring is right around the corner!

With release of the 2021 ORC rules and VPP last week, US Sailing is now ready to issue ORC certificates valid for immediate use. There are very few changes to the VPP and ratings from 2020, yet there are some significant upgrades to the certificates themselves.

First, any valid ORC Club or ORC International certificate may also be issued on request a valid Double Handed and/or Non-Spinnaker certificate. For boats that are raced in these different modes during the season this reduces the cost and hassle of having to amend the same certificate.

Second, the certificate itself has been re-designed to be easier to read, with the scaled drawing of the boat and sail plan on the first page accompanied by basic dimensional data. The second page now has a greater variety of simple scoring options that have been popular in races and regattas throughout the US. And the third and fourth pages provide even greater details on measurement data of the rig, boat and sails that contribute to the boat’s rated speed.

A full explanation of these features is at www.orc.org/orcinternational

Lastly, all ORC certificates this year will also receive a FREE ORC Speed Guide and Target Speeds output, a $75 value.

A summary of the 2021 rule changes, explanation of scoring options, and online forms for applying for new certificates, revalidation of past certificates, and transfer to ORC certificates can all be found on US Sailing’s ORC page: www.ussailing.org/competition/offshore/orc.
